PROVING FUTURES AND GOVERNING UNCERTAINTIES
IN TECHNOSCIENCES AND MEGAPROJECTS

FOREKNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT SERIES
1st INTERNATIONAL MEETING

12-14 December 2016

MAISON DE LA CHIMIE, PARIS

The use of anticipatory tools like numerical simulation and future scenarios for demonstration is frequently questioned by non-specialists for their related uncertainties, namely in the complex domains of Technosciences and Megaprojects. Beyond epistemic interests, the conference will focus on how current knowledge and uncertainties were framed, qualified, and rendered discussable among experts, decision-makers and diverse publics in different illustrative settings (climate sciences, nanotechnologies, nuclear waste disposal, crime control, prevention of floods…), with regard to confidence building and choice elaboration.

This interdisciplinary conference is organized by Andra and initiates the “Foreknowledge Assessment Series”, a series of regular meetings seeking to enhance the dialogue between scientists, policy actors, stakeholders and informed citizens.

Program Committee : Madeleine Akrich (Mines ParisTech), Luis Aparicio (Andra), Anne Bergmans (Universiteit Antwerpen), Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent (Université Panthéon-Sorbonne), Soraya Boudia (Université Paris Descartes), Michel Callon (Mines ParisTech), Jean-Alain Heraud (Université de Strasbourg), Pierre-Benoît Joly (IFRIS), Saida Laârouchi Engström (SKB).

Keynote “Scenario Futures”

Peter Galison, Harvard University

PETER GALISON is the Joseph Pellegrino University Professor of the History of Science and of Physics at Harvard University; Galison’s work explores the complex interaction between the three principal subcultures of physics--experimentation, instrumentation, and theory. He is also greatly concerned with the impact of technology on the self, and how this influences science, policy, and development. With Robb Moss, he directed “Secrecy” (2008, 81 minutes) and recently completed “Containment” (2015, premiered at Full Frame), about the need to guard radioactive materials for the 10,000 year future. This film will be screened and discussed in a specific session at the end of the Conference.
